When Are Dental Crowns Needed?

Dental crowns can completely change the appearance of a tooth or prevent a fragile tooth from breaking. Your Reno, NV, dentist, Dr. Jintae dental crownsPark of JP Dental Care, can help you protect or enhance your smile with versatile crowns.

What are dental crowns?

Crowns are tooth-shaped restorations that are hollow inside. Made of porcelain, porcelain-fused-to-metal, ceramic, or porcelain, crowns completely cover teeth above the gum line. They are available in a variety of color that match common tooth shades.

Before you receive a crown, your Reno dentist must file the tooth a little to make room for the restoration. This will occur during your first crown appointment, which will also include the taking of an impression of your mouth. This impression is then used as a template during the creation of your new crown. You'll leave the dental office with a temporary crown and return a few weeks later for the placement of your permanent crown.

Do I need a crown?

Crowns can prevent fractures in teeth, a danger that you are more likely to experience if you have a crack, a very large filling, have had root canal therapy, or if a tooth has begun to crumble. If your tooth is at risk, biting into a piece of hard, or even soft, food may cause your tooth to break one day. If the fracture extends into the tooth root, it may not be possible to save the tooth. Adding a crown to your tooth reduces the risk of a fracture, for your new crown will absorb the strong pressure produced by biting and thus protect the tooth underneath.

Teeth can fracture if you weren't aware you had a crack, you put off getting a recommended crown after dental treatment, or you have received a blow to the face. Luckily, crowns also restore broken teeth. After you receive your crown, your tooth will look just like it did before it fractured! Crowns also eliminate pain caused when the broken ends of teeth are exposed to the air.

Do you want to make over one of your teeth? Crowns can extend the length of short teeth, hide discolorations, and even change the shape of teeth. They're an excellent option if one of your teeth is crooked, pointed, twisted, or doesn't resemble your other teeth.
